Fictional Islands (Fictional island in the Mediterranean Sea) is a programme curated by Daniel Blanga Gubbay (Aleppo – Brussels) for the Festival DanseM 2018 in Marseille.

The programme was curated in partnership with Pierre-Laurent Boudet (Entropie Production, Brussels) and Francesca Corona (DANSEM – Marseille).

Performances:
Monte Cristo, Khutrea, Isla Sagrado… Many Mediterranean islands have fictional origins. If the imagery around the Mediterranean Sea is a combination of its various cultures and islands, does these fictional islands modify the sea’s identity? Can we imagine these islands’ folklores and cultures?
For this project, artists have created propositions that bridge the gap between theory, sound and movement. Fiction becomes a political tool that is used to question the Mediterranean space and its imagery.

They have created a journey that takes the audience from one proposition to the other: a video installation by Egyptian artist Malak Helmy, a choreographed dialogue between Jacopo Jenna and Bassam Abou Diab, an intervention by Blanga Gubbay, a concert by Sequoyah Tiger, Invernomuto’s Black Med Project (recently created for Manifesta 12 in Palermo) and Anne-Lise Le Gac & Tropicantesimo’s atmospheric installations.

This project is an invitation to travel from an installation to the other, from one island to the other. Together, these performances create the fictional story of the Mediterranean area.
