In the middle of the public space lies the sculpture of a half-buried mammoth skeleton. Did it come to light during an excavation? Did it die here recently? Is it the emergence of a fantastic creature?
This project involves creating a wooden sculpture in a public space. It would take place on the central terrace of the Place Morichar. It would be big; bigger than a mammoth, rather like some dinosaurs. This mammoth comes from before, from a very long time ago. The figure will evoke a journey through time, the cohabitation of two worlds and two eras. Here, prehistory emerges in the heart of the city and its absolute modernity. Here, the gigantic will rub shoulders with the very small, particularly childhood.
Mammoths are like titans: a superhuman dimension that precedes us and has fallen. It’s both a model of humility and a warning about our future. My work in the city is a way of getting the beasts out of the museum, of getting art out of its walls. The sculpture would be freely accessible. Its solid structure would make it as much a work of art as urban furniture. People could come and touch it, sit on it, ride on it, play with it.
So it would be as much a visual work as a place to stop and play. Here the Mammoth is an archaeological dig available to all.
